The invention relates to a drive system (1) for a vehicle (2), the drive system (1) having a component (3) with a first state variable and at least one state variable to be estimated and an evaluation unit (4) for determining a value of the state variable to be estimated and at least one first sensor (5) for detecting a current value of the first state variable, wherein the evaluation unit (4) is set up to use a first covariance matrix to predict the value of the state variable to be estimated and using the current value of the first state variable and a second one Covariance matrix to correct the value of the state variable to be estimated, the first covariance matrix being a measure of noise at least of the state variable to be estimated and the second covariance matrix being a measure of noise when the current value of the first state variable is detected, and the evaluation unit (4) has an approximation module (6) for approximating the first and second covariance matrix as a function of at least the current value of the first state variable.
