A control system for controlling the slip of a torque converter clutch includes a clutch system model that is configured to a value of a parameter relating to the slip of the torque converter clutch, as a function of the inputs of the clutch system model, which include the predetermined clutch pressure, and as a function of the torque of the torque generating device to predict. The control system also includes a model predictive controller configured to receive signals indicative of the determination of a desired value of the parameter related to torque converter clutch slip and a predicted value of the parameter related to torque converter clutch slip , to receive a signal representing the reported torque of the torque generating device, to identify an optimal predetermined clutch pressure value that will result in an optimal value of an objective function based on the clutch mechanism model, and to provide a control signal to an actuator that is effective to control the predetermined clutch pressure on the torque converter clutch.
