The belay device (100) for controlling the movement of a rope (1000) is such that it includes a safety device (102, 103) and an electronic device (101), the electronic device (101) being configured. to: • check at least one of the following conditions: ○ detection of the middle of the rope (1000), ○ detection of the proximity of one end of the rope (1000) to the belay device (100 ), ○ a running speed of the rope (1000), relative to the belay device (100), greater than or equal to a predetermined speed threshold, ○ a need to change the rope (1000), • activate the device security (102, 103) when said at least one of the conditions is satisfied.
