The invention relates to a hot tensile-compression machine for a longitudinal test piece (30) comprising: a deformation device (15) for stretching and compressing said longitudinal test piece (30); a heater (38) for supplying thermal energy to said test piece (30); an extensometer (44) adapted to be brought into contact with said test piece (30) to measure the amplitude of elongation; a control member (60) controlling said deformation device (15) during a given period of time at low frequency and according to an amplitude as a function of the amplitude measured by said extensometer (44). The machine further comprises an actuator (54) connected to said extensometer (44), and said control member (60), controlling after said period of time has expired, said actuator (54) to move said extensometer (44) from said test piece (30), and said deformation device (15) during another period of time given at high frequency.
