A dirt separator for a vacuum cleaner comprising a chamber 36 having an inlet 37 through which dirt-laden fluid enters and an outlet 38 through which cleansed fluid exits the chamber 36. A disc 40 located at the outlet 38 rotates about a rotational axis and comprises holes (47, fig 4) through which the cleansed fluid passes. The disc comprises a central non-perforated region (45, fig 4) surrounded by a perforated region (46, fig 4), the holes (47, fig 4) are formed in the perforated region (46, fig 4) and the diameter of the non-perforated region (45, fig 4) is no less than a third of the diameter of the disc 40.
