Commutation of a brushless direct current motor (BLDC) is controlled using one or more sensors adapted to provide a variable output dependent on the rotational angle of the motor or the relative position of the stator and rotor of the motor. The output signals from the sensors is sampled at a time tn between a last commutation event Cm-1 and the next commutation event Cm to be implemented. An angular position αn is determined between rotor and stator at time tn at the time since the last commutation event Cm-1. The time tm of the next commutation event Cm is determined based on the past measured position αn, the timestamp tn of that past position and the instantaneous speed ω of the motor. The speed ω may be determined from a model of the motor.
