A portable device comprises a communication interface 504 operable to receive text information and a tactile pad for generating a tactile output. The tactile pad comprises a plurality of touch elements 514A, 514B having a controllable tactile output. The portable device is provided with a connecting portion for securing the portable device to a handheld games controller 100 (figure 4). A processor 508 of the portable device is configured to receive the text information and to control the tactile output that may be in the form of braille. The touch elements may comprise haptic output devices that provide a tactile output by controlling the perceived friction at different locations on the tactile pad. The tactile pad may be mounted to the touch pad of a game controller. The portable device may comprise a touch screen or touch sensor wherein the processor uses the touch information to control the touch elements.
