A pump has a sensor for detecting output pressure of the pump and a controller for controlling pump speed depending on the detected output pressure, so as to maintain the output pressure at a desired level. The output pressure may be sensed directly by a pressure sensor or indirectly by a flow rate sensor. Preferably the pump has a sensor for detecting pump motor power. An aircraft is disclosed having multiple engines and the pump associated with each engine. Each pump supplies fuel to its associated engine and is also arranged to supply fuel to another engine if the pump associated with that other engine fails. A method of operating a pump comprising the steps of sensing a pump output pressure and controlling pump speed to maintain the pressure at a desired level is disclosed.
