A sensor network has a controller 100 and sensors 106, 112, 114, 118, 122, 124 distributed about areas 108, 116, 120, 126, which communicate via a wireless communication with the controller 100. Each sensor senses a parameter and provides this to the controller, via the wireless communication link, according to a reporting condition. The controller also obtains location data of the sensor devices. The controller determines a reporting command for a sensor based on the obtained sensor data and the location data and provides this to the sensor device to update the reporting condition. Another invention replaces sensor data which does not match an expectation, with sensor data from another sensor. Another invention obtains sensor data at a first rate until an expectation value is established, then reducing the rate.
