An adjusting mechanism for adjusting the length of a telescopic supporting leg 100 includes an adjusting assembly comprising engaging member 21, engaging portions 421, a driving member 23 and an operating member 25. The engaging member 21 and operating member 23 are at opposite ends of a supporting pipe 41 which is telescopically adjustable relative to another pipe 42. The other pipe 42 has engaging portions 421 formed as holes in its side walls to allow discreet staged longitudinal lengthening or shortening of the support leg 100. The operating member 25 acts as a handle to operate adjustment at a remote end of the pipe 41. The driving member pushes a seat against a resilient spring 24 to urge engaging member 23 laterally inward as locating pins 28 are guided along oblique driving slots 231 to release the adjustment mechanism. Buttons 251 of the operating member 25 have oblique slanted faces 252 which urge cooperating oblique faces 233 of the driving member 23 to release the engaging member 21. The supporting leg can be used as a child car safety seat support leg (fig 1). A second adjusting mechanism (30, fig 11) can be provided with pivoting engaging members 311 to engage with the engaging portions 421.
