The invention relates to a method for displaying an object list, an image, an image mosaic, a virtual 2D object space or a virtual 3D object space, wherein at least one object detected by means of a detection method or at least one sensor (2) is displayed or marked by means of digital computer graphics and/or a digital computer text on a display device (4). The object and/or its marking is displayed in an optically modified form depending on the detection age of the at least one object. The modification can involve changing the colour, contrast, resolution or sharpness as the time since the object was last detected increases. The object or its mark may be removed if the time since the detection was lost is greater than a threshold value. The method may be used for monitoring of an area or building, to highlight or mark automatically detected objects for an observer such as a security guard, in particular by means of an overlay or superposition.
