There is disclosed a location marker device 500 for marking the location of, for instance, an underwater cable or pipe 410. The device 500 comprises an arrangement for detachably attaching the device to a tool 405. The tool 405 may comprise an underwater grabber arrangement 415 and cutter arrangement 420. The device 500 comprises an arrangement 504 for retaining a cable or pipe 410. The retention arrangement 504 comprises first and second retention elements 506a; 506b (e.g. arms) disposed on respective first and second sides of the device 500, and pivotably attached to a (main) body 512. The device may include a locator means such as a sonar beacon 520. In use, the grabber and cutter arrangements may secure one portion of the cable or pipe 410 while the location marker is attached to the other (after cutting) portion of the cable or pipe. The location marker is then released from the tool, to mark the cut end of the cable or pipe.
