A flame module for a spectrometer includes an oxidant gas safety controller comprising a switch and an energy storage circuit, wherein the controller is configured to charge the energy storage circuit when the switch is normally powered, and in the event of loss of power the controller is configured to discharge the energy storage circuit to increase the flow rate of oxidant gas. A valve in an oxidant gas supply line is opened to increase the flow rate. A fuel gas supply line with valve is also controlled by a fuel gas safety controller which acts to close the fuel gas valve. A method includes reducing a flow rate of fuel gas to a flame module in the event of interruption of supply of power to the module and increasing a flow rate of oxidant gas such that the flame 19 is extinguished.
