Elevated platform apparatus 99, e.g. for painters and decorators, comprises a ladder 200 including a plurality of rungs 223 which is convertible from a first configuration to a second configuration in which it provides two leg portions 26 and a horizontal portion 21 to support a platform 20. In the second configuration a safety rail device 100 is releasably attached to the horizontal portion 21 by an attachment mechanism. The attachment mechanism comprises at least two locating pins 222 extending horizontally from the safety rail device 100 through respective rungs 223 of said horizontal portion 21. The locating pins 222 are dimensioned and arranged to be a sliding fit in the respective rungs 223. The sliding fit allows the safety rail device 100to be fitted or removed quickly, but remains secure in use without the need for fixings.
