Capillaries are aligned on a plane in array 49 supported by device 84. The capillaries form point emitters 1 emitting M light beams, where M is at least 2. Each beam is condensed by one of an array of M condensing lenses 2. The beams are incident in parallel on a sensor (25, Fig. 7). The effective diameter of the emitters, the interval between the condensing lenses, their focal lengths, and the maximum optical path length from lens to sensor satisfy a specified relationship. An array of pinholes 73 may be arranged between the capillary array and condensing lens array, the pinholes aligned with the lenses. An array of N dichroic mirrors (17-20, Fig. 7) may be arranged between the condensing lens array and the sensor and perpendicular to the array of lenses, to form M´N light beams incident on the sensor, the N light beams being different from each other.
