An appliance, preferably a vacuum cleaning appliance, comprises a first portion 10 having a first battery 15 and a first device 19 which is arranged to draw power from the first battery 15. The appliance further comprises a second portion 11 having a second battery 16 and a second device 20 arranged to draw power from the second battery 16. The first and second portions are interconnected such that the device of each portion is also able to draw power from the battery of the other portion. In this manner the batteries supplement and complement each other and increase the operating time and ratings of the appliance. Preferably, the first portion comprises the body of a vacuum cleaner and the second portion comprises the cleaning head (figure 1). In this example, the first device may comprise a fan motor and the second device may comprise an agitator motor. One or both of the batteries may be removable from the appliance for recharging, and both devices may be operable from one battery when one battery is disconnected or low in power. The first and second portions may be mechanically and electrically separable from each other.
