The portable waste collector (100, 400) comprises two or more containers (110) for storing different types of waste, a user interface (120), a sorting mechanism (130) configured to sort a received piece of waste into one of the two or more containers according to its type, the sorting being based on a waste sorting control signal obtained based on the user input received via the user interface, and a waste release mechanism (140) configured to separately release the waste stored in the containers (110). The waste collector station (200) comprises two or more containers (210) for different types of waste, an interface (220) adapted to receive waste from the portable waste collector (100, 400) and to receive separately the waste from the two or more containers (110), and a mechanical or electronic alignment component (250) for aligning opening of the portable waste collector (100, 400) with the interface (220).
