PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating and testing a light detection and ranging system, which regularly and continuously tests proper operation of at least a receiving part of the light detection and ranging system, preferably a complete system. An optical detection and ranging system (1) includes a test unit (8) for testing at least one optical signal detection unit (4) and at least one signal processing unit (5). A second light source 9 for sending the test optical signal 10 therein to at least one optical signal detector 4. The invention further relates to a light detection and ranging system 1, in particular an operation and test method of the light detection and ranging system 1 for safety-related applications, and a light detection and ranging system 1 for implementing this method.
