PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use supplying power to an electric furnace to contribute to long life of a furnace refractory.SOLUTION: A temperature is determined at a plurality of positions inside of a furnace wall and an outer face of the furnace wall of an electric furnace 1 by thermocouples 5, thermal flux in an inner peripheral surface 1a of the furnace wall is calculated based on the measured temperature and initiation of burn through of scraps is determined based on the thermal flux in the furnace wall inner face 1a.
