A method for evaluating signal reception performance of a receiver during radio beam steering operation of a radio frequency (RF) data packet signal transceiver capable of multiple input/output (MTMO) operation. In response to the transmission of the sounding packet (SP) from the beamforming device (“beamformer”), the receiving device (“beamformee”) responds to signal attenuation due to the radio signal path environment in which the beamformer and beamformee communicate. Transmit a response data packet containing matrix data representing the relevant beamforming feedback matrix (BFM). This matrix data can be used to calculate the statistical variation that is indicative of the beamformee signal reception performance.
