A wood boring insect detector 10 comprises a housing 20 defining an interior chamber 26 including an opening; a spacer member 28 surrounding the opening and defining an internal cavity 29; an acoustic sensor 40 mounted within the interior chamber; a probe 30 projecting through the opening and internal cavity of the spacer. Exposed tip portion 32 of the probe is for insertion into a specimen. Base portion 34 of the probe is connected to the sensor. The spacer member defines a separation between the housing and the specimen and depth of insertion of the probe tip into the specimen. In use, wood boring insect activity within the specimen transmits as vibrations along the probe to the sensor which converts the vibrations to an output signal of characteristic acoustic frequency indicative of insect activity within the specimen. A mount 50, resilient pad 60, and resilient outer sheath 70, can help reduce background noise to improve acoustic properties.
