A fiber optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system (500) for detecting a red palm weevil (RPW) includes an optical fiber (100) configured to be wrapped around a tree and a DAS box (502) connected to the optical fiber (100). The DAS box (502) includes a processing unit (530) that is configured to receive a filtered Rayleigh signal (520) reflected by the optical fiber (100), and run the filtered Rayleigh signal (520) through a neural network system (1100, 1500) to determine a presence of the RPW in the tree.
