The invention relates to a breast pump (10) comprising a breast shield (11) intended to be pressed against the breast of a mother using the device, a tube (12) along which the mother's milk passes connecting the breast shield (11) to a vessel (13) for collecting the expressed milk, and a pump (14) intended to apply suction to the tube (12). According to the invention, such a breast pump (10) comprises means (15) for selecting and controlling the mode of operation of said pump (14) so that the latter can, as desired: - in at least a first mode of operation, apply at least a first pumping action, causing the suction to vary according to first parameters, to the breast shield (11) via the tube (12), allowing milk to be collected when the breast shield (11) is pressed against the breast of the user so as to suck milk from the said breast shield (11) to said collecting vessel (13); - in a second mode of operation, with the breast-shield (11) end of the tube (12) immersed in a rinsing liquid (21) stored in a container (20): - apply a second pumping action, causing the suction to vary according to second parameters different from the first parameters, to said tube (12) so as to suck said rinsing liquid (21) in said tube (12) toward said collecting vessel (13) for a fixed length of time that allows said tube (12) to be cleaned, then - interrupt the pumping action.
