The invention relates to an ultrasonic metal welding device and to a method for welding electrical conductors having a clearance space that is adjustable at least in height, which clearance space is delimited in opposite sides by a portion of a sonotrode as the first delimiting surface and by at least one portion of a counter electrode (156) as the second delimiting surface, the counter electrode and the sonotrode being adjusted relative to one another for welding. The type of counter electrode used is one that comprises portions (152, 154) of geometrically different working surfaces or consists of at least two portions that are adjustable relative to one another.
