Device and method to control acccess to protected functionality of applications

Disclosed is a password management system 106 for computing devices 100 that store several executable applications. Each of the applications requiring entry of a password to at least execute in part. The password generation and management system manages access to the applications. The system initially generates a first password for a first application based on user selection and inputting of a security identifier. The system then generates a second password for a second application based on user selection and reiteration of the security identifier, and generate unique passwords for the other applications based on their individual selection and a distinct reinputting of the security identifier. The password generation and management system, then providing the respective password to allow the execution of a particular application in response to the user selecting the application and inputting the security identifier, without comparing security identifier whose input resulted in the generation of respective password with the just entered security identifier. The security identifier may involve the user interacting with an image or set of images, or it may be biometric.
