Peripheral modules (1) of a distributed control system are designed as motor modules (1b) or as sensor modules (1a). The peripheral modules (1) are connected directly or indirectly via a connection network (7) to a control device (5) via uniformly prefabricated interfaces (4) arranged on the peripheral modules (1). Before a startup phase of the distributed control system, a string (17) is written into a first memory area (13) of a remanent memory (12) of the respective peripheral module (1) via the interface (4) of the respective peripheral module (1). In the commissioning phase, the peripheral modules (1) read their strings (17) from the first memory areas (13) and transmit the strings (17) to the control unit (5). The control device (5) automatically determines the assignment of the peripheral modules (1) to their control tasks (SA) on the basis of the strings (17). In normal operation of the control system, the control device (5) receives input variables (E) from the sensor modules (1a) via the respective interface (4) of the respective sensor module (1a). It assigns the input variables (E) of the respective control task (SA), determines by execution of the respective control task (SA) respective output variables (A) and transmits the respective output variables (A) to at least one of the respective control task (SA) associated engine module (1b ), via the respective prefabricated interface (4) of the respective motor module (1b).
