The invention relates to a metal ring (32) for use in a drive belt (3) for a continuously variable transmission, which metal ring (32) is provided with a core having a hardness of more than 700 HV1.0 and/or with a yield stress of more than 2000 MPa. In particular the invention relates to such metal ring (32) made from maraging steel basic materials comprising Iron with 17 to 19 mass-% Nickel, 4 to 8 mass-% Molybdenum and with 15 to 21 mass-% Cobalt and additionally satisfying the requirement that the sum of the Molybdenum and Cobalt content amounts to at least 22 mass-% and preferably amounts between 24 and 28 mass-%.
