Site measurements of reverberation performed in the classrooms of 18 government subsidized primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong were presented. The results indicated that regardless the sizes, the operation condition and the usage of the classrooms, the rapid speech transmission index correlates significantly better with the single octave band and broadband reverberation times. It was observed that the correlation between the rapid speech transmission index and the broadband reverberation times appeared to be less independent on the number of frequency bands included. It was suggested that the rapid speech transmission index was more suitable to be the design target in term of speech intelligibility in classrooms.
