La tragédie de l'histoire. Hegel et l'idée d'histoire mondiale

The hegelian philosophy of history comprises two parts closely linked together. The rationalist conception of history asserts at once the intelligibility of the historical events and the historicity of spirit, which reveals himself in these events. The theory of world-history (Weltgeschichte), which means to explain the all history of the world from an universal point of view, is based on the interpretation of three complementary themes : the French Revolution of 1789, the Christianity, and the Greek tragedy. What Hegel wants to do is therefore reconcile the notions of freedom and progress, stemming from the Age of Enlightenment, with the antique notion of destiny, which refers, according to him, to the tragic side of history.
