The purpose of this paper is to study the socialudrole of archival science as one of the contributingudelements in the constitution and epistemologicaluddelimitation of the boundaries of the discipline.udThe social role is understood as the awarenessudthat archival practice must have in terms of beingudresponsible for memory, as it is its duty to decideudor implement policies of memory, policies of preservationudof documents that will become legaciesudfor future generations. Accordingly, this paper isuddeveloped as follows: general considerations willudbe made about some epistemological criteriaudin order to assess the delimitation of archivaludscience as a science; the purpose is to clarify whatudwe understand by memory and its relationshipudwith the file, appealing to the conceptualizationsuddeveloped from philosophy, particularly based onudRicoeur and Derrida; finally, a reflection is presentedudon the challenges currently faced by archivistsudregarding the policies of memory at issue.
