The study examines changes in the competitive situation of the television broadcasting industry from 1975 to 1990 and presents some predictions for the next decade. Over the past fifteen years the range of broadcast, cable, and other video options available to the American viewer has increased dramatically. Broadcast television, however, has suffered an irreversible long-term decline in audience and revenue share, which will continue throughout the current decade. The analysis supports the conclusion that in the new reality of increased competition regulations imposed in a far less competitive environment to curb perceived market power or concentration of control over programming are no longer justified and may impede the provision of broadcast services.
