The Japanese Government has approved a new basic policy statement for science and technology. It revises the 1986 policy statement. Changes include an increasing emphasis on environment and health research, while maintaining programs for improving the economy and promoting industrial-academic-government research. The policy also promised to double Japanese Government research and development (R&D) investment 'as early as possible'. The full text of the revised policy statement is included.
