摘要

The time-Laplace longitudinal-wavenumber analysis of the wave propagation alongclosed and open, possibly lossy planar waveguiding structures leads to remarkable conclusions. For the closed waveguides, all of the solutions pertaining to the discrete infinite spectrum correspond to causal propagating guided waves. For the open waveguides however, a discrete spectrum that corresponds to a set of causal solutions does not exist. This implies that in an open electromagnetic waveguide there is no time-Laplace-domain equivalent of the frequency-domain concept of discrete propagating modes.
