Research Strategy to Develop Ecological Indicators of Wetland Condition.

The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP)-Wetlands indicator selection strategy is a multi-stage, iterative process for identifying ecological indicators of wetland condition for a national wetland monitoring program. The framework includes a conceptual model for indicator identification and interpretation that links societal values with potential stressors, and a rigorous indicator selection screening process guided by indicator selection criteria and field testing programs. The resulting core indicators will be scientifically defensible as the basis for detecting wetland degradation or improvement.
