Controlling Chemical Hazards. Fundamentals of the Management of the ToxicChemicals

The chapter describes control strategies and technologies used to reduceenvironmental risk from toxic chemicals. It includes an overview of legislative infrastructure supporting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It describes the factors contributing to the complexity of the toxic control problem and the regulatory methods to establish control limits. The chapter also presents four important treatment approaches and examines the advantages and disadvantages of each. The four treatment approaches are biological degradation, chemical degradation, separation processes and containment. The chapter presents representative treatment technologies and evaluates current limitations of the treatment state-of-the-art.
