Overview of the FY94 National Drug and Alcoholism Treatment Unit Survey (NDATUS):211 Data from 1993 and 1980-1993

This report describes specialty substance abuse treatment services in the U.S.,211u001ebased on the National Drug and Alcoholism Treatment Unit Survey (NDATUS). The 211u001esurvey queries specialty providers of substance abuse treatment, including 211u001efacilities that only treat substance abuse (called free-standing), and 211u001especialized units within multi-purpose institutions such as hospitals. The survey 211u001eis administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration 211u001e(SAMHSA), in collaboration with the States. Other Federal agencies also 211u001eparticipate by identifying treatment facilities that they support. NDATUS 211u001esolicits data concerning provider and client characteristics from a census of all 211u001eidentified providers. These data pertain to a specific reference date. For the 211u001eFY94 survey, it was October 1, 1993. Provider characteristics include 211u001einstitutional setting, ownership, treatment services, and source of funding. 211u001eClient characteristics are summarized by counting people who are actively 211u001eenrolled by substance of abuse (alcohol, drugs, or both), sex, age, 211u001erace/ethnicity, IV (injection) drug use, pregnancy, HIV status, and waiting list.
