The Beaver Dam Eye Study is designed to determine the incidence and progressionof age-related cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and loss of vision. All persons living in the town or township of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, who participated in a baseline examination (1988-1990) will be eligible to participate in the 5-year follow-up. The examination will include: refraction, visual acuity measurements (distance and near), contrast sensitivity measurement, visual field testing, determination of height, weight, body circumference and blood pressure, timed walk, standardized questionnaire, blood sampling, and photography of the lens, optic disc, and macula of each eye using standard procedures. Photographs are graded according standard detailed protocols for the presence and severity of lesions. The protocols for all methods and procedures used in this study are included. The data obtained will yield accurate incidence and rates of progression of these eye diseases and will permit evaluation of the risk of these conditions associated with these ocular diseases will be determined. This cohort will be re-examined to determined the long-term incidence and progression of these diseases.
