The EBRD, the newest of the Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), began operation in April of 1991. It was created to help build market economies in eastern/central Europe and the former Soviet Union. The Bank is unique among Multilateral development banks in its focus on the private sector and its policy of investing only on commercial terms. The balance of this commercial guide is devoted to summaries of a majority of the European Bank's Country Strategies. They are included to provide the reader with a thumbnail sketch of the framework that guides the Bank's activities in a particular country.
