摘要

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is the most commonly used insulating gas in electricalsystems to date. It is however, a potent greenhouse gas and, thus, its use entails fears of environmental costs, regulations, and restrictions, in spite of its current low levels in the environment. This potential problem and current efforts in the search for short-term and long-term solutions are briefly outlines and discussed in this report. Limiting the release of SF6 in the environment, recycling SF6, and using it where it is needed the most, are among the elements of an emerging consensus effort for the short run. A long-term solution may include the search for alternative high-voltage insulants such as high-pressure gaseous dielectrics (e.g., N2 and N2/SF6 mixtures).
