Aircraft Management Studies: Selecting a Simplified Method for Acoustic Samplingof Aircraft and Background Sound Levels in National Parks

This report describes the development of a simplified method that National ParkService personnel can use for the collection of acoustic data. This introduction explains the need for such a method, and remainder of the report describes how a method was tested and developed for implementation. This report describes the testing and evaluation of two such methods and the final selection of a third method by HMMH and Park personnel. Each method uses a basic sound level meter, a digital watch, and a specific form that must be filled in by a trained observer. The observer listens, notes the levels at regular time intervals and logs the sound level. Additionally, some weather observations are made, and an initial and final instrument calibration are required.
