摘要

In this study the authors compare the community and institutional living211u001earrangements of older members of detailed racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. 211u001eThe authors also profile of the housing environments of older members of these 211u001egroups and estimate a series of multivariate models of living arrangement 211u001eoutcomes that include both individual-level and contextual determinants. These 211u001eactivities were accomplished based on data from the 1990 Census of Population and 211u001eHousing. An 8% sample of the population age 60 and over was matched with 211u001econtextual data on the local housing environment for purposes of this study. 211u001eBased on these data, the highest rates of living alone are observed for non-211u001eHispanic Whites, Blacks, and Native Americans. Rates of living with a spouse only 211u001eare highest among non-Hispanic Whites and, to a lesser extent, Japanese. Much 211u001ehigher rates of coresidence with extended families or others are observed for 211u001emembers of all minority groups, but particularly among Asians and Hispanics, 211u001eGroup quarters residence is also quite low for these groups.
