UK-Swedish Field Trial on Short-Wavelength Coherent Laser Radar

A joint UK-Swedish comparative trial of short- and long-wavelength laser radars,211u001ewas held at DERA Pershore over the period 14-25 April 1997. The performance of 211u001ethree laser radar systems was investigated: (1) A compact, low-power continuous-211u001ewave (CW) Swedish system based on a semiconductor (diode) laser source at a 211u001ewavelength of 1.5 micrometers, (2) A DERA 1.5 micrometers CW system incorporating 211u001efiber optics and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier to boost diode output to over 1 211u001eW, and (3) a fully-evaluated DERA 10 micrometers (CO2) CW system for performance 211u001ecomparison. The broad aims of the trial were: (1) To measure the relative effects 211u001eof atmoshperic turbulence at short and long wavelength; To calibrate system 211u001esensitivity in hard-target detection and probe the performance limits; To assess 211u001ethe potential for wind sensing at short wavelength; and (4) To assess the 211u001ereliability of the short-wavelength of fiber technology.
