Work Release: Recidivism and Corrections Costs in Washington State. Research in211 Brief

Two NIJ-sponsored evaluations of Washington State's work release program,211u001econducted between 1991 and 1994 are discussed. The first study analyzed a cohort 211u001eof 2,452 males released from Washington prisons in 1990, nearly 40 percent of 211u001ewhom spent a part of their sentences on work release, to describe how work 211u001erelease operates and how successfully inmates perform in the program. The second 211u001ecompared the recidivism of 218 offenders; approximately half participated in work 211u001erelease and half completed their sentences in prison.
