It is estimated that as many as twenty percent of today's children will have211u001esurvived the death of a parent by the end of high school; eleven children a day 211u001eare killed by guns in accidents, suicides, and murders; an average of four 211u001estudents a year die in a school system of 6,000 students; and by the age of 14 a 211u001echild will have witnessed 18,000 deaths-mostly violent murders on television. 211u001eThese figures do not begin to account for the additional deaths of friends or 211u001eloved ones caused by drunk driving crashes or violent deaths witnessed in the 211u001estreets of our cities. Nor do they address the effects of mass violence and death 211u001eresulting from a community wide tragedy such as the 1995 bombing of the Federal 211u001eBuilding in Oklahoma City and its impact on all of the children there.
