Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Modelling and New Techniques

The aim of this thesis was to develop physical understanding of magnetic211u001estimulation and to build models that could provide new insights for utilizing the 211u001etechnique. For this purpose, two principal issues had to be addressed: (1) 211u001emacroscopic electromagnetic fields in the tissue, for which models are developed 211u001ein Publications I-III, and (2) understanding of the neuronal responses, 211u001econsidered in Publications IV and V. Then, the models developed were used as a 211u001ebasis for engineering modifications that would increase the utility of TMS, the 211u001eemphasis being on the optimization of the stimulating coils and on the use of 211u001emultiple coils in a whole-scalp array. Publication VIII presents the concurrent 211u001euse of TMS and high-resolution EEG, showing that the combination is effective for 211u001emapping the functional connections in the brain.
