摘要

In response to vehicle owner complaints about the operation and performance of211u001esome antilock braking systems (ABS), the National Highway Transportation Safety 211u001eAdministration (NHTSA) began examining components from ABS systems at the Vehicle 211u001eResearch and Test Center (VRTC) in Easte Liberty, Ohio. These examination found 211u001ewhat appeared to be corrosion damage and deposits in the ABS hydraulic pressure 211u001econtrol valves. Suspecting that these observations were the result corrosion of 211u001emetallic components in brake fluid and that ABS systems with their increased 211u001ecirculation and closer tolerance valves might be more susceptible to corrosion-211u001einduced deterioration in performance than conventional braking systems, NHTSA 211u001erequested that NIST conduct some preliminary studies into the nature and scope of 211u001emetallic corrosion in this environment. The objective of this work is to help 211u001eNHTSA, industry, and consumers by developing a better understanding of the 211u001ecorrision phenomena in the ABS environment. The focus of this is on quantifying 211u001ecorrosion phenomena (corrosion metrology) in this environment so that NHTSA, 211u001eVRTC, and automotive industry experts can determine if corrosion can influence 211u001eABS operation to the extent that changes in brake fluid testing standards, ABS 211u001edesign, or other actions are required.
