The increasing demand for low sulfur diesel fuels has put pressure on the oil refinery processes that are applied to remove sulfur from diesel fuel (gas oils), the so-called hydrodesulfurisation (HDS) processes. It is generally believed that the existing HDS processes and catalysts will be unsuitable for the large scale production of diesel fuel with a sulfur content of 0.005 w. % or less. This is mainly related to the presence of a group of sulfur compounds, the alkylated dibenzothiophenes, which possess a very low reactivity over the catalysts that are presently applied in HDS processes. Since these sulfur compounds have to be removed to reach sulfur concentrations as low as 0.005 w. %, improved HDS processes and catalysts are desired. The thesis at hand deals with the development, characterization and practical testing of catalysts which show an improved activity for the removal of low-reactive dibenszothiophenes from gas oils, the so-called deep desulfurization.
