Superfund Explanation of Significant Difference for the Record of Decision (EPA211 Region 9): Stringfellow Acid Pits, Riverside, CA., July 9, 1998

This document presents the explanation of significant differences (ESD) for a211u001eproposed change to the remedy chosen to the second Record of Decision (ROD2) for 211u001ethe Stringfellow Superfund site (the 'Site'). Currently, contaminated groundwater 211u001eis being extracted from a series of wells located in the original disposal area 211u001eof the Site and in downgradient, contaminated zones just to the south. The 211u001eextracted groundwater is pumped to the on-site Stringfellow pretreatment plant 211u001e(the 'PTP') where the water is treated to remove site contaminants. The treated 211u001ewater from the PTP is then transported by tanker truck and discharged into the 211u001eregional wastewater collection system, commonly known as the Santa Ana Regional 211u001eInterceptor (SARI), that serves the upper Santa Ana River watershed area. Since 211u001ethe time ROD2 was completed, the SARI has been extended and now passes within 1.5 211u001emiles of the Stringfellow PTP. A direct pipeline to the SARI line would eliminate 211u001ethe tanker truck trips on the regional highways and municipal streets, and result 211u001ein a significant reduction in operating costs of the Stringfellow PTP.
