Federal Wildfire Activities: Current Strategy and Issues Needing Attention

Concerned about the rising costs of preparing for and controlling wildfires,211u001eCongress asked us to provide information on how the Forest Service and the Bureau 211u001eof Land Management manage their wildfire programs. Specifically, this report 211u001eprovides information on (1) the process the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land 211u001eManagement use to determine the amount of funds needed to prepare for fighting 211u001efires; (2) the roles and responsibilities of the National Interagency Fire Center 211u001ein mobilizing firefighting resources; and (3) the types of agreements reached 211u001eamong federal, state, and local firefighting organizations. We also looked at 211u001eseveral issues that could affect the agencies ability to manage their 211u001efirefighting programs in the future.
