Network Group Internet Report. Examination of the NS/EP Implications of Internet211 Technologies, June 1999

The purpose of this report is to examine how a severe disruption of the Internet211u001ecould affect National Security/Emergency Preparedness (NS/EP) operations over the 211u001enext 3 years. The report focuses on the current Internet infrastructure and 211u001eanticipated near-term enhancements, and recognizes traditional threats and 211u001evulnerabilities, such as equipment malfunctions, natural hazards, sabotage, and 211u001ephysical design. It addresses potential concerns as new technologies and 211u001eregulatory mandates affect the evolution of the Internet. Additionally, the 211u001egrowing threat from malicious intruders is considered. The approach to this study 211u001einvolves these tasks: Examine the extent to which NS/EP operations will depend on 211u001ethe Internet over the next 3 years; Identify vulnerabilities of network control 211u001eelements associated with the Internet and their ability to cause a severe 211u001edisruption of Internet service, applying lessons learned from National Security 211u001eTelecommunications Advisory Committee's (NSTAC's) similar studies of the Public 211u001eSwitched Network (PSN), and Examine how Internet reliability, availability, and 211u001eservice priority issues apply to NS/EP operations.
